Because Carmona is quite small, and not far from Seville, this trip can be organised for either a full or half-day. The journey to Carmona is by bus, which drops us off about five minutes from the entrance to the old centre, near the replica Giralda tower of San Pedro church and the Alameda de Alphonso XIII. Often overlooked as a place to go by visitors to Seville, the old centre of the little town of Carmona simply oozes that Spanish atmosphere you came here to see.

After lunch at one of Carmona’s excellent tapas bars we will spend the afternoon in and around the picturesque old town, with visits to the Seville gate and the Moorish Alcázar, the old market, Plaza San Fernando, Santa Maria church (on the site of the main mosque, and retaining some of its features) and other sights, finishing with coffee or drinks in the quiet luxury of the Parador hotel in the old fortress of El Rey Don Pedro – with its views over the surrounding countryside it’s easy to understand why this was his favourite refuge from the rigours of court life in Seville. From there we walk back down the hill to catch the bus back to Seville.
